Australian military set of four
ANZAC
The acronym stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and the brave soldiers who fought in the Gallipoli campaign are now referred to as Anzacs. The beach where the landing took place became known as ANZAC cove. The term ‘Lest we forget’ became associated with their sacrifice.

Sailor
The Australian colony’s naval forces combined at Federation in 1901 to become the Australian Navy’s Commonwealth Naval Force. It received Royal patronage in 1911 and was from then known as Royal Australian Navy (RAN)

Airman
The Central Flying School (CFS) was drawn up in 1912 and in 1913 it was decided that Point Cook, Victoria was the best location for the school. CFS flights began in 1914. The Australian Flying Corps (AFC) was subsequently formed in 1920. The Australian Airforce was formed in 1921. King George V approved the prefix ‘Royal’ in June 1921. Hence RAAF.

Nurse
Australian Nurses were on the first convoy of ships to Egypt in November 1914. Nurses stationed on hospital ships received the wounded throughout the Gallipoli campaign in 1915.
Once enlisted, Nurses had to remain for the duration of the war unless wounded.
